About
buto/buto (pronounced: buh’toh-buh’toh) : bones are seeds is a collection of scenes dramatizing the stories of the first Filipinos who came to Canada through the 1791 Malaspina Expedition, the 19th-century Filipinos on Bowen Island, BC, and the current Filipino community of Lower Mainland, BC. The all-Asian cast contributes their own migration stories into the script, as the director, Dennis Gupa, and three playwrights deconstructs the stories alongside the history of Filipino migration to Canada.
The theatre production was produced by the National Pilipino Canadian Cultural Center (NPC3), and the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Society (SEACHS), with special participation of Anyone Can Act Theatre (ACAT). The producers of the project is extremely grateful for the enormous funds given by the Canada Council for the Arts, BC Arts Council, the City of Vancouver, community donors and friends.
This production was situated on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation).
